Here is a letter from Peru, which we received over the summer. It comes from Mayten Sanchez Ruiz, whose Casa de Mayten community project benefits children affected by the 2007 earthquake in Peru. Mayten received the money we raised through our 2007-2008 C.A.N. Project, and then she wrote back in English to thank us:
Dear Upper Grades Students,
Through me, please receive my kids' and my hugs and "thank you"s for the generous donation you made to help my project "La Casa De Mayten", and our efforts to creatively educate, organize, and help build better communities.
As you may know, this is an independent, self-financed, self-sustained, self-everything type of project, and I must tell you that your help has arrived when we needed it most. I am out of everything and need to buy materials desperately, and have a trip to Cusco with the kids scheduled for this month. Cusco is 21 hours from Chincha, and while I am trying to get local airlines to donate 15 round trip tickets, I am not getting much of a response... so I am assuming, we will have to go via Bus and will have to buy all 15 tickets. We will be part of an exchange program there and my kids will be part of wonderful workshops they will both attend and teach. So, thank you sincerely for the help.
Marek, I would like to invite you and your kids to visit a blog I created just a few weeks ago through which I am trying to keep friends from the world up to date with what I am doing and where the project is. The blog now is in Spanish and could be great practice for your Spanish class. As soon as I have more time, I will develop the English version for all to read. I will also start putting up profiles of the kids I work with to include pictures, their favorite things to do, etc... I think that would be a good way for your kids to start getting to know my kids, and your kids will be able to leave comments on my blog. My blog's address is:
You can also see more pictures and l learn a bit more about my project visiting myspace at:
I also have information on HI5, but I am not sure if you guys in the states use that. Again, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts. I will keep you and your kids posted about what we are doing. My blog will also help keep you informed.
